I'll never forget the first time I watched Gummo at the Melbourne Film Festival. Everything about it blew my mind open and completely changed the way I saw cinema. After that screening it played at the old Lumiere cinema for a couple of weeks and I saw it almost everyday. I'd go in on my own usually and sit in the dark to bare witness to these incredible images and sounds. With every viewing I'd find something new in it, like each time the layers were being peeled back to reveal something fresh and raw. It changed me on some level and I've never been the same since. The film, I know, doesn't have the same effect on others and lots of people hate it outright but I'll go in to battle for it any day. Harmony is a fearless artist and film maker. He is righteous!
